Sheep Wagon $40

As you open your door the heat will hit you.  After you’re in bed (incredible, you will love the bed), you will smile. Unwind and read a book, or snuggle up and listen to the wind, the sounds of a farm.  It has a small surge protector for the heater, light, your cell phone, or laptop. This is a very dark rental (1 little light), and 2 battery lanterns   You have to shut off the heater if you use the electric hotplate for the shepherd’s most important amenity, hot coffee, hot tea, and hot soup.

We were the first Sheep Herder’s Wagon on airbnb in Idaho.  Here is some history.  My wife knew the original owner in Oregon, she saw it where she lived.  It was sold to a buyer in McCall, she recognized it, then we bought it from him. This was such a fun project for her. Much of the original wood was left intact.  The table and cupboard are original to this wagon. She used leather for the door because it expands and contracts to the weather. Though different companies made sheep wagons, the design almost never changed. They were around 11 feet long and 6½ feet wide; Dutch or double door in the front; sheet-metal cook and heating stove on the right with a narrow stovepipe poking through the roof; bed across the back where the herder slept perpendicular to the door; window above the bed; and shelves everywhere else, including a small table that pulled out next to the bed.  There was a small window on each side and possibly a sink. On the wagon’s exterior, carpenters mounted grub boxes between the front and back wheels. The older wagons had tilt-out cupboards for flour, small rails for wash rags, clamps and brackets for brooms, and wash pans and wooden drawers for everything from cutlery to plates and coffee cups.  The old sheep wagons were portable homes for lonely Greek, Basque, Scotch, and Hispano herders who left their families to follow their sheep.
